Andy Ruiz earns a unanimous decision victory over Luis Ortiz

In their WBC title eliminator, Andy Ruiz Jr, a former world heavyweight champion, dropped Luis Ortiz three times on route to winning by unanimous decision. It only took Andy Ruiz Jr. a split second to alert the boxing world of his potential for danger.

Ruiz briefly caught Luis Ortiz off guard before unleashing a powerful overhand right that resulted in the first of three knockdowns that helped him win the fight on a unanimous decision on Sunday night, live on pay-per-view. The judges at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles gave Ruiz victories with scores of 113-112, 114-111, and 114-111.Although Ruiz could have put together a more persistent effort that would have resulted in a stoppage, "The Destroyer" ultimately earned the significant victory.

Ruiz's fast hands proved to be too much for the 43-year-old Ortiz, who was battling age but not giving up. Ruiz moves one step closer to a crack at the world championship because the contest was an eliminator for the WBC heavyweight title.

At the weigh-in on Saturday, Ruiz, who recruited Alfredo Osuna as his trainer after defeating Arreola and parted ways with Eddy Reynoso, weighed in at 269 pounds and appeared to be in reasonable shape.

In June 2019, Anthony Joshua was startled when Ruiz won the IBF, WBO, and WBA titles. The following December, Joshua won the titles back in their rematch. Ruiz now wants to get back into the title contention again. He said after the victory "I thought I did a beautiful job boxing and countering," he said. "I thought I showed some different class than I usually do instead of just pressuring him and going forward." He added "I want to be champion again and bring that belt back to Mexico!"

Ruiz expressed his desire to face former WBC champion Deontay Wilder after his victory over Ortiz, who watched the contest from the stands. In the first half of 2023, if Wilder defeats Robert Helenius next month, it's feasible, if not likely, that they will square off against each other and trade bombs inside the ring and give the fans what they want.
