Bob Arum apparently has several attractive offers to keep lightweight champion Devin Haney part of his promotional orbit.
The head of Top Rank Inc. outlined three fights for the 24-year-old Haney, who retained his undisputed distinction last month with a unanimous decision over Vasiliy Lomachenko.
The fight brought to a close Haney’s multi-bout contract with Top Rank, which he signed with last year.
Arum said a rematch with Lomachenko could be a possibility, given how close it was and how a significant swath of the boxing public believed Lomachenko deserved to win.
Another fight is for Haney to take on the winner of this Saturday’s 140-pound title fight between WBO champion Josh Taylor and Teofimo Lopez at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City; Haney has hinted at moving up to 140. Yet another option would be for Haney to fight two-division titlist and current lightweight contender Shakur Stevenson.
Arum said he hopes to present the possible plans to Bill Haney, Haney’s father, trainer, and manager.
“Well I haven’t talked to Bill about it,” Arum said on The 3 Knockdown Rule. “Bill is doing what a manager should do. And that’s to look for the best opportunity for Devin. What I can come up is three [fights] in my imagination: one may be the winner of Taylor and Teofimo at 140. If he (Haney) wants to go up in weight.
“Secondly, there is a fight with Shakur that would be massive because everybody would want to see that fight, and third is the rematch (with Lomachenko).
“Hopefully Bill comes to New York for the Teofimo-Taylor fight. I’ll sit with him. He’s a very intelligent guy. We’ll discuss all the options that we at Top Rank can offer. And then he has to weigh it against what any other promoter would offer to determine what he wants to do next. But we’ve enjoyed promoting Devin and hope it continues.”
Haney would conceivably entertain offers from Eddie Hearn's Matchroom, his former promoter, and Premier Boxing Champions.
