Danny Garcia defeats Jose Benavidez with a majority decision

Danny Garcia (37-3, 21 KOs) won a majority decision over Jose Benavidez in a 12-round super welterweight fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

The judges awarded Danny Garcia a majority decision victory: 112-116, 111-117, and 114-114.

Benavidez (27-2-1, 18 KOs) was defeated for only the second time in his pro career. Before Saturday night, his only loss was a 12th-round technical knockout to unbeaten WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford in October 2018 at the CHI Health Center in Omaha, Nebraska.

Garcia defended himself well, every so often countered Benavidez with right hands, and decisively beat Benavidez on two of the scorecards in their 12-round, 154-pound main event at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Garcia had not competed since losing to Errol Spence Jr. by unanimous decision in December 2020, a gap of nearly 20 months.

Garcia, 34, unexpectedly broke down and cried during the interview: “I did take a break going through mental things, things went dark, I went through anxiety, deep depression, just trying to be strong,” Garcia said, fighting through tears.

“It was the pressure of life, being a good dad, just letting it out right now because it was all stuck inside. It rained on me for a year and a half and the only way to do better was to fight again. I’m a fighter. If you battle anxiety and depression, you can get out of it, that’s what I did today. I fought.”

According to Danny Garcia, he wants to face either Keith Thurman or Erislandy Lara next.
