Delhi Opens Centre of Excellence for Boxing, Wrestling, and Athletics
In a groundbreaking development for Indian sports, Delhi has inaugurated its first Centre of Excellence (CoE) dedicated to boxing, wrestling, and athletics. Located in Dwarka, Sector 8, this state-of-the-art complex aims to elevate India’s sporting infrastructure and offer world-class facilities for elite athletes in key sports disciplines. The facility was officially opened on May 8, 2025, by Delhi's Lieutenant Governor, V.K. Saxena, and marks a significant step in India's push to enhance its competitive edge on the global stage.
The Vision Behind the Centre of Excellence
The Delhi Centre of Excellence (CoE) was built to foster the growth of athletes in boxing, wrestling, and athletics by providing them with cutting-edge training environments. The facility spans an impressive 23.3 acres and features both indoor and outdoor sports amenities designed to meet international standards. This new centre is part of a larger vision to transform Delhi into a sports hub, not just for the capital but for the entire country.
The CoE is more than just a training facility—it's a comprehensive ecosystem for developing future champions. It will serve as a place where aspiring athletes, regardless of their background, can access world-class coaching, nutrition, sports science support, and training regimens that rival international institutions.
World-Class Facilities for Elite Athletes
The Centre of Excellence features a wide range of top-tier facilities, ensuring that athletes have access to everything they need for optimal performance. Some of the key offerings include:
Indoor Facilities:
Boxing Ring and Wrestling Mats: Equipped with professional-grade rings and mats for
training at all levels.
Weightlifting Area: Specialized areas designed for strength training and power development, crucial for both boxing and wrestling athletes.
Multi-purpose Rooms: Spaces dedicated to sports like taekwondo, table tennis, yoga, and aerobics to promote versatility in training.
Outdoor Facilities:
Synthetic Courts: Six courts each for lawn tennis and badminton, with facilities for basketball and pickleball. This helps athletes cross-train and diversify their skills.
Track and Field: A state-of-the-art synthetic athletic track perfect for sprinting and distance running. This will aid in honing the skills of athletes across multiple disciplines.
Aquatic and Fitness Zones:
Olympic-Sized Swimming Pool: A 50m x 25m pool designed for both competitive swimmers and those seeking cross-training options.
Jogging/Walking Track: A dedicated path for athletes and the general public to stay fit.
Future Additions:
The CoE will also expand with additional facilities in the near future, including a combined football and hockey ground, a skating rink, and a children’s park to foster the next generation of sports enthusiasts.

Supporting Elite Performance
The main goal of the CoE is not just to provide facilities, but to create a conducive environment for athletes to excel. The facility offers expert coaches, sports psychologists, physiotherapists, and nutritionists to ensure that athletes receive holistic training. Additionally, the complex will host sports science programs and workshops that help athletes improve their mental and physical resilience.
Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor, V.K. Saxena, emphasized the importance of such a facility in inspiring youth to pursue sports. He noted that the Centre would cater to children from remote areas and disadvantaged backgrounds, giving them an opportunity to excel in sports and potentially represent India on the world stage.
Long-Term Impact on India’s Sporting Landscape
The opening of the Centre of Excellence is part of a larger national effort to improve India’s performance in global sporting events. With India set to host the 2032 Summer Olympics, there is a concerted push to strengthen the nation’s sports infrastructure and athlete development programs.
The Dwarka CoE is just the beginning. Delhi Development Authority (DDA) plans to expand the initiative by building more Centres of Excellence across the city, each focusing on different disciplines.
Upcoming Centres of Excellence:
Rohini Sector 33: An Aquatics Centre of Excellence, which will serve as a hub for water sports training.
Dwarka Sector 19: A Centre of Excellence for tennis and shooting, giving athletes the tools to succeed in two highly competitive sports.
Dwarka Sector 23: Dedicated to football and hockey, the CoE will promote these popular sports and provide athletes with high-quality training facilities.
These Centres of Excellence will be equipped with the latest technology in sports science, coaching, and analytics, ensuring that India can nurture athletes capable of competing with the best in the world. The DDA’s long-term vision includes developing 17 sports complexes and three golf courses across the National Capital to create a robust sports ecosystem.

The Road Ahead: Nurturing India’s Sporting Talent
The Centre of Excellence in Dwarka represents more than just an investment in infrastructure—it’s an investment in the future of Indian sports. By providing world-class facilities and support to athletes at the grassroots level, the CoE aims to raise the standard of sports in India, ensuring that the next generation of athletes has everything they need to compete on the global stage.
As this project continues to unfold, the impact on Delhi and India’s broader sporting community will be felt for years to come. The Centre of Excellence will not only benefit professional athletes but also encourage youth participation in sports, helping to foster a culture of physical fitness and achievement across the nation.
