Former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov's promotion is gaining traction with well-known names. Former UFC standout Kevin Lee and Diego Sanchez clash in the headliners of tonight's Eagle FC 46 event in Miami.
Shortly after his release, Kevin Lee signed an agreement with Khabib Nurmagomedov's Eagle FC to participate in the promotions of the new 165lbs weight class.
Lee (19-7) got his long-awaited wish when he first competed in the 165-pound division. He hopes to leave his career at Eagle FC in a division that he thinks will be best for his body type. Sanchez (30-14) also competed outside the UFC for the first time since his expulsion in September 2020.
First Round: From the first round, Diego Sanchez starts working with some solid body kicks. He kicks heavily and Kevin Lee's leg appears to be compromised. Lee's leg could be injured. But shots from above would also start coming from Kevin Lee. He struck Diego in the back of the head. Horn sounds and Lee fires a pair of late shots at Sanchez.
Lee massively outscored Sanchez and put him on the back foot. Lee also got take-downs in the first two rounds, which resulted in less back control in the first round and some elbows to eliminate the second frame.
Sanchez continued to attack Lee's left leg in the final round and he was actually connecting with some standard head shots, but Lee's left hook sent the 40-year-old to the canvas. In ordinary Diego fashion, he survived but was otherwise a beaten man when Lee spent the rest of the hour on the mat.
This is Lee's first victory over Gregor Gillespie since the 2019 head kick KO, and his first decisive victory since Efrain Escudero in 2016.
The co-main event champion Rizwan Kuniev and challenger Anthony Hamilton competed in the heavyweight title. Kuniev (12-2-1), the winner of his last nine, was hoping to reach double digits while defending his title. Hamilton (18-11), a 10-fight UFC veteran, looked back from his last outing to claim gold.
