Fabricio Werdum Withdraws from GFL Season After Losing Motivation

MMA legend Fabricio Werdum has decided to withdraw from the inaugural GFL season, citing a lack of motivation as the key reason behind his departure. The former UFC heavyweight champion was initially scheduled to compete but has now opted out after the cancellation of his planned fight.

Throughout his career, Werdum has cemented his status as one of the most accomplished heavyweights in MMA history. From his historic submission victory over Fedor Emelianenko to his UFC title win, he has left an undeniable mark on the sport. While not always the biggest fan favorite, Werdum has consistently focused on his path rather than public perception.

However, in recent years, the Brazilian veteran has fought only sporadically, weighing the long-term impact of his fighting career. Despite these concerns, he was initially slated to be part of GFL’s debut season, only for his plans to fall through.

“Frank Mir was a fight that motivated me to return. After he announced his withdrawal, I also lost my motivation,” Werdum said upon returning to Florianópolis and his normal routine.

The 46-year-old fighter had been training at Andre Dida’s academy in Curitiba, alongside names like Wanderlei Silva and Brunno Hulk, but ultimately felt that Mir’s removal took away his drive to compete.

“The atmosphere in Andre Dida’s academy in Curitiba is unbelievable. It was such a great experience to return to the training routine with Master Rafael, Wanderlei, Dida, Brunno Hulk, and Blindado, but I have to feel the same motivation to return and that was not the case when Mir (was not an option).”

With Werdum turning 48 this summer, his decision to step away from the competition isn’t surprising. While it remains unclear whether he will ever return to the cage, fans will remember him as one of the most skilled and decorated heavyweights to have graced the sport.
