Gilbert Burns Eyes Final Title Run with Focused Approach at UFC Fight Night 242
Gilbert Burns

Gilbert Burns is ready to make a statement as he heads into the main event of UFC Fight Night 242 this Saturday. After a period of rest and reflection, Burns (22-7) is determined to prove he remains one of the welterweight division’s most formidable fighters.

Burns has been out of action since March, following a knockout loss to rising star Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 299. The defeat marked his second consecutive loss, a first in his career, coming after a decision loss to Belal Muhammad. Despite the setbacks, Burns is eager to turn things around in his upcoming bout against Sean Brady (16-1) at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

“I’m super excited to be back there and finish this guy – get back and prove to me and all the critics that I still belong at the top and I still have one more title run left in me,” Burns said.

Aware of the skepticism surrounding his current form, Burns is motivated by the critics and ready to show that he still belongs among the welterweight elite.

At 38, Burns understands that every fight is crucial as he looks to return to the level that once saw him challenge Kamaru Usman for the UFC title in February 2021. To achieve this, Burns has adopted a more strategic approach to his career, focusing on staying injury-free and maintaining peak physical condition. He now has a clear set of criteria for accepting fights, emphasizing the importance of being in shape, injury-free, and fully prepared.

“I have a criteria now,” Burns explained. “We talked to the coaches. I’ve got to be in shape. I’ve got to be healthy – zero injuries. My weight is always good...If I have no injuries, we’ll see. I’m planning on calling those guys out in the top five and get another one in December or January.”

Burns acknowledges the challenge ahead in Sean Brady, a dangerous grappler coming off a submission win against Kelvin Gastelum. However, Burns believes his experience and determination will carry him through.

“I just think I’ve got so much experience with all these tough guys back-to-back – a murderer’s row. I’ve fought all the toughest guys in the division,” he stated, confident in his ability to avoid a three-fight losing streak.
