Last Saturday at UFC 305 Israel Adesanya suffered a stunning defeat at the hands of Dricus Du Plessis, marking the first time in his career that he’s lost two consecutive fights. This loss has sparked intense debate about whether Adesanya’s days as a top contender in the UFC are behind him. Among those weighing in is UFC legend Michael Bisping, who offered a candid assessment of Adesanya’s future in the sport.
“He looked great, he had moments of brilliance, certainly in Round 3 when he was piecing Dricus du Plessis up on the feet…we gotta ask the question, is Izzy done? Is his championship days over? Because the answer to that one is more than likely,” Bisping remarked on his YouTube channel. The former Middleweight champion didn’t hold back, pointing out the harsh realities of the fight game. “It’s a tough reality. Fight sports is a b****, they don’t care. Israel Adesanya had moments of brilliance, he looked really good and looked to be in great shape. More muscle on him and took this fight seriously, went out there, and got beat…”
Bisping’s comments cut to the heart of a difficult truth: Adesanya’s recent track record doesn’t inspire confidence. “The last one, he got beat against Sean Strickland. Two fights before that, he lost to Alex Pereira…when you look at the history, the track record, Israel Adesanya has now lost three of his last four fights. That’s a far cry from the championship run that he went on where he was stopping everybody, defending the belt in 12 consecutive title fights,” Bisping observed.
The pressure of maintaining such a high level of performance is immense, and Bisping suggests that Adesanya may have reached his limit. “That’s an insane amount of pressure, and stress on the body, physically and mentally, a big burden to carry…you only have one peak, you don’t have two, that’s why it’s called the peak. And when you look throughout combat sports history, it’s what always happens.”
Adesanya’s loss to Du Plessis was a major upset and has led many to question whether the former champion can regain his footing in the UFC’s middleweight division. While he has been one of the most dominant fighters in recent memory, his recent struggles suggest that his time at the top may be coming to an end.
As Bisping notes, “It’s a tough sport, and the reality is that once you start to decline, it’s very hard to climb back up. Adesanya has had an incredible career, but it’s hard to see him contending for titles again.”
Adesanya’s legacy in the UFC is secure, but his future is uncertain. Whether he can make a comeback or if his best days are behind him remains to be seen. But as Bisping suggests, the odds are not in his favor. Whatever Izzy does next, Fight.TV is here for it!
