At 58 years old, boxing legend Mike Tyson is again stepping into the ring, this time against YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul. While Tyson’s finances are secure thanks to his successful cannabis company, Tyson 2.0, the former heavyweight champion isn’t fighting for money. Instead, he’s driven by something much deeper.
“I could be waiting on a check every day from cannabis,” Tyson said during Cage Wars 67, a mixed martial arts event in New York. “That’s (B.S.) for me. I’m a man. I want to go out there and expose myself to risk.”
For Tyson, the risk is part of the thrill. After years of dominating the boxing world, the challenge of stepping into the ring again fuels his motivation.
“Sometimes I want to see who I am. I want to see what I’m made of,” he said, expressing a desire for self-discovery at this stage.
The bout, scheduled for November 15 at AT&T Stadium in Texas, will be live-streamed by Netflix. While Jake Paul recently mentioned that he expects to earn $40 million from the fight, Tyson downplayed the financial aspect.
“This fight is not going to change my life financially enough. This is just what I want to do.”
The lead-up to the fight hasn’t been smooth for Tyson. He was sidelined due to an ulcer flareup, which led to a postponement. However, he confirmed that his health has improved.
“I have no more ulcers, and my blood count is almost back,” Tyson said, revealing he had resumed training in July.
Though training at 58 isn’t the same as it was in his prime, Tyson remains optimistic. He recently sparred six rounds and plans to increase that to ten in preparation for the eight two-minute-round match. “The fight is won in the gym,” he emphasized. But age has taken its toll.
“It’s hard to walk right now,” Tyson admitted, acknowledging the challenges of training at his age. “But two months from now I’m going to be perfect.”
As part of his recovery regimen, Tyson is using electric stimulation and stem cell treatments to aid in his training. “Listen, I’ll do anything that will help me,” he stated, determined to put on a show for his fans once again.
Despite the physical challenges, Tyson’s hunger for the fight remains as strong as ever. “I want to perform in front of the world,” he said, revealing the fire that has driven him since his teenage years. As he prepares for this unexpected showdown, one thing is clear—Tyson is still chasing the thrill of the fight.
