After a decorated run in mixed martial arts, Molly McCann is embarking on a new journey in the world of professional boxing. The former UFC flyweight and strawweight contender, affectionately known as "Meatball," has officially signed with Matchroom Boxing, one of the sport's premier promotions. Matchroom chairman Eddie Hearn confirmed the news on Thursday, although her opponent and debut date have yet to be finalized.
“She’s officially signed with Matchroom Boxing,” Hearn said. “Molly McCann will compete now as a boxer, about time I’d like to say as well. Former [Amateur Boxing Association] champion. Everyone knows the ability as a boxer, obviously been a massive star within the UFC. Built a profile globally as well and we’re delighted to start the journey with her.”
At 35 years old, McCann is now fully transitioning from the cage to the squared circle, following her retirement from MMA in March. The decision came after a first-round submission loss to Alexia Thainara, marking her third such loss in four outings. Though the end of her UFC career was rocky, McCann leaves MMA with a reputation for her gritty fighting style and crowd-pleasing performances, especially in her home country of England.
Before joining the UFC, McCann made a name for herself on the European circuit. In 2018, she captured the Cage Warriors flyweight title, becoming the promotion’s inaugural 125-pound champion. That milestone earned her a contract with the UFC, where she began her journey on the global MMA stage.
Inside the octagon, McCann quickly became a fan favorite. Her aggressive, forward-pressing style led to some spectacular moments, including highlight-reel knockouts that electrified arenas and gained her widespread recognition. Between 2019 and 2022, she posted an impressive 6-2 run, elevating her status as one of the most exciting fighters in the women’s flyweight division. During this time, she fought and defeated notable names and even flirted with title contention.
However, as the level of competition increased, so did the challenges. Her final stretch in the UFC saw her drop four of her last five bouts, with three of those losses coming by first-round submission—a clear vulnerability in her MMA game. Still, even in defeat, McCann remained a polarizing and popular figure in combat sports.
Now, with her roots in boxing rekindled, McCann returns to a sport where she initially honed her skills. Before stepping into the MMA spotlight, she was a former Amateur Boxing Association (ABA) champion, and Hearn noted that it’s “about time” she returns to her boxing base. With Matchroom backing her, McCann will have the platform, promotion, and infrastructure to succeed in this new chapter.
For McCann, the move represents a fresh start and a chance to capitalize on her striking strengths without the threat of grappling and submissions. With her charisma, crowd-pleasing style, and proven punching power, she has the potential to make waves in the boxing world just as she did in MMA.
As fans await the announcement of her debut opponent and date, one thing is clear—Molly McCann's combat sports journey is far from over. And now, under the Matchroom banner, she looks to bring the same passion and tenacity to the boxing ring that made her a household name in MMA.
