Rampage Jackson's rise to UFC stardom was marked by a lucrative payday and a unique pay-per-view clause that netted him a staggering $7 million for his title fight against Chuck Liddell at UFC 71.
Jackson, fighting in just his second UFC bout, had his contract purchased by the UFC after a single fight in the WFA. His promotional debut saw him knock out Marvin Eastman, earning him a shot at Liddell's title.
While Jackson's purse for the UFC 71 fight wasn't substantial, a pay-per-view clause from his WFA contract that the UFC had to absorb ensured he received a significant share of the pay-per-view revenue. Jackson explained on his podcast that the WFA had given him a generous pay-per-view deal, anticipating they wouldn't host pay-per-view events. This clause led to Jackson pocketing around $7 million from the Liddell fight.
However, Jackson later discovered that his contract had been altered without his knowledge, and subsequent fights did not yield similar pay-per-view earnings. Despite this, Jackson was thrilled with his $7 million earnings, which were in addition to his fight purse for facing Liddell.
The UFC 71 bout ended in a first-round knockout victory for Jackson, crowning him the new UFC light heavyweight champion. He defended the title against Dan Henderson but lost it in his next fight to Forrest Griffin.
Jackson, with a record of 38-14 in MMA, last fought in December 2019, suffering a knockout loss to Fedor Emelianenko. Throughout his career, he has secured notable victories over fighters like Lyoto Machida, Wanderlei Silva, and King Mo, solidifying his status as one of MMA's top competitors.
