The quarter-finals of the Road to UFC Tournament in Singapore continued on Friday, with the same venue hosting UFC 275 on Saturday. Road to UFC included fighters from Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, India and China.
Friday's event was the first of two back-to-back events at Road to UFC 3 and Singapore Indoor Stadium.
As with the two episodes of the Road to UFC series, the third episode featured a short four-fight card when one player failed to lose weight for the event. After losing weight, which saw the struggle of Sho Patrick's post, the light weight was removed from the card.
Among the big winners is Rizin veteran from Topnoi, who won an interesting and competitive decision over Yuma Horiuchi.
Topnoi struggled as he got stuck in the back control for stretches, but for the most part, the Maui Thai showman performed crisp strikes with the temperament and show-booting he is known for. He improved his career to 8-3, and advanced to the flyweight semifinals.
The show also featured two South Korean fighters, Kyung Pyo Kim and Jeong Yeong Lee, both of whom finished in about half a minute. In Lee, "The Korean Tiger" found a clever arm in just 36 seconds in its featherweight tournament match, where it also used the fence to get the right angle for the finish.
The "Red Horse" Kim, on the other hand, gained a quick KO on the Asikerbai Jinensibieke, making big shots to stop his experienced Chinese rival in exactly 30 seconds of the first round.
Following the four sections of the Road to UFC, a semifinalist has been selected from each division.
Given the country-by-country records on these road-to-UFC events, it is surprising that Korea and Japan had the most success. In four matches, the South Korean fighters won 5-2 while the Japanese fighters won 5-3. China also had good success, leading 4-4.
