Sergio Martinez Ready for a Showdown with Gennady Glovokinin 2023

Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez prepares himself for another title run at middleweight as he lines Gennday Glovokin as a possible opponent.

Age seems to be just a number for Martinez as the Argentinean eyes a bigger glory one more time in his career. Martinez is lining up options for the coming new year and there is a familiar prospect topping that list, Triple G.

Martinez reigned at junior middleweight and middleweight during the last decade keeping everyone at bay back in 2010. Martinez decided to hang his glove in 2014 but returned to professional boxing six years later.

Martinez has competed five times in the ring since his return. He was victorious in all of them but none of those five fighters matched the calibre that Glovokin possess, Martinez’s speculated opponent.

Martinez is well aware of the fighting prowess of Triple G but believes he can give the Kazakh fighter a run for his money even at this age.

“If I can pick who to challenge, I would say Gennady Golovkin," Martinez told Izquierdazo. “Someone can tell me that Golovkin is going to kill me. Yes, I know he can kill me. Or not. I also know that I can give him a boxing lesson. I’m getting better every day. I’m not getting as good as I was, I’m getting much better”.

Martinez is ranked third in the WBA's middleweight rankings. He could possibly be facing the WBA's "regular" champion, Erislandy Lara. But Maravilla feels like his fight with Lara could prove to be a boring affair.

He wants to give fans a fight to remember and for this, GGG seems to be a perfect candidate.

“I aim to fight Gennady Golovkin”, Martinez said. “Maybe my manager will aim at Lara. But I know that a fight with Lara might be super boring. Lara gets on his bike and dances around you, moving and moving, so it would be an ugly fight.
