Bellator lightweight champion Usman Nurmagomedov is determined to prove his cousin Khabib Nurmagomedov’s prediction that he is the future of MMA. Fresh off his dominant unanimous decision victory over Alexander Shabliy in the main event of Bellator Champions Series 4, the 26-year-old fighter continues to make waves in the 155-pound division, improving his professional record to an impressive 18-0, 1 NC.
Usman’s performance against Shabliy solidified his reign as the Bellator lightweight champion and showcased his skillset to the MMA world. After securing his 19th professional win, Nurmagomedov expressed his confidence in rising further in the sport. Speaking to reporters post-fight, he addressed Khabib’s praise and reaffirmed his commitment to proving his place among MMA’s elite.
“I will prove (him right),” Nurmagomedov stated. “This is the future. I am the future.”
Hungry for more competition, Usman already has his sights set on his next fight. He hopes to return to the cage in early 2025 and has identified Dubai as the ideal location.
“I want to fight in Dubai because I think they have an event in January,” Nurmagomedov explained. “I want to stay active, I want to fight every three or four months because I am only 26, I want to fight. I am hungry.”
While fans have speculated about a potential move to the UFC, where his cousin Khabib once ruled and Islam Makhachev now reigns as lightweight champion, such a transition is unlikely shortly due to his ongoing Bellator contract. However, Usman remains confident that he can continue his unbeaten streak and cement his status as one of the best 155-pounders in MMA, regardless of promotion.
As Usman Nurmagomedov pushes forward, the MMA world will be watching closely to see if he can live up to the lofty expectations set by his legendary cousin and continue his meteoric rise.
