Islam Makhachev, the current UFC lightweight champion, will not be part of the UFC 300 card, but his coach has provided an update on his future plans.
The event will showcase a pivotal lightweight bout between former champion Charles Oliveira and Arman Tsarukyan, with UFC CEO Dana White stating that the winner will become the number one contender for a shot at Makhachev's lightweight title.
While fans are eager to see who will emerge victorious and challenge Makhachev, his coach, Javier Mendez, has revealed some insights into their plans.
Mendez expressed his desire to see Makhachev fight at Madison Square Garden after Ramadan, citing the arena's historic significance and the potential boost to Makhachev's marketability in the U.S.
Mendez also outlined potential opponents for Makhachev, including Justin Gaethje, Charles Oliveira, and a future move to welterweight.
"I'd like to see Islam become the welterweight world champion in 2025," Mendez stated. "If we get two fights this year, who knows, you might see the UFC offer him a title shot sooner."
