The long-anticipated clash between Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic is finally set for November 16, 2024, headlining UFC 309 at Madison Square Garden in New York. UFC CEO Dana White confirmed the heavyweight title fight, with the promotion making it official during the UFC 309 broadcast.
Both fighters have been linked to this matchup for over a year, originally scheduled to face off at UFC 295 in 2023. However, an injury sidelined Jones after he tore his pectoral muscle, forcing the UFC to postpone the bout. Miocic, a two-time UFC heavyweight champion, opted to wait for his chance at redemption against Jones.
Jon Jones (27-1), who last fought in March 2023 when he claimed the vacant heavyweight title by defeating Ciryl Gane, will make his first title defense against Miocic. Despite his long layoff, Jones remains confident, having successfully transitioned from light heavyweight to heavyweight, and now aiming to solidify his legacy with a win over one of the greatest heavyweights in UFC history.
Miocic (20-4), who last fought in March 2021 when he lost his title to Francis Ngannou, has not competed since but remains one of the most decorated heavyweights in the sport. With his last fight over three years ago, this bout presents a golden opportunity for Miocic to reclaim his heavyweight throne.
While fans have eagerly awaited this showdown, an interim heavyweight title bout between Tom Aspinall and Sergei Pavlovich was booked during Jones and Miocic’s absence. Aspinall claimed the interim title with a stunning first-round finish over Curtis Blaydes, but all eyes will be on UFC 309 as he waits to face the winner of Jones vs. Miocic.
This epic heavyweight clash will mark another historic event at Madison Square Garden, where the UFC has staged numerous iconic fights since 2016.
