The 27-year-old Irish MMA sensation is gearing up for the biggest fight of his career. After a whirlwind few months, Paul Hughes is set to face former Bellator world champion AJ McKee in a highly anticipated bout on October 19th in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, sharing the card with the return of Francis Ngannou.
Hughes, who made waves as a Cage Warriors world champion, was widely regarded as one of MMA’s hottest prospects. His recent signing with the PFL, after every major MMA promotion showed interest, has cemented him as a key figure in the post-Bellator buyout era. This deal also guarantees him entry into the 2025 PFL lightweight tournament, where he will compete for a $1 million prize.
Reflecting on his journey, Hughes admits that the past few months have been hectic. He recalls his final Cage Warriors fight in April, where last-minute opponent changes tested his composure. Facing the experienced Fabiano Silva, Hughes overcame immense pressure, winning the fight and securing his future with PFL.
"It was a mad time," Hughes shared, adding that the chaotic circumstances only strengthened his resolve.
Hughes made his PFL debut in Dublin’s 3Arena, co-main eventing against Bobby King. Conor McGregor, who was cage side, praised Hughes as Ireland’s next big MMA star.
"It was very special to have an opportunity to do that," Hughes said, noting how the moment mirrored McGregor’s rise in the same arena.
Now, Hughes is preparing for the toughest test yet against McKee, who boasts a 22-1 record.
“By far, this is the biggest challenge of my career," Hughes admitted. "But there is also a reason why I’ve been saying for the last 12 months that I’m one of the best fighters on the planet: It’s because I am. I get a chance to prove that."
With a potential showdown against Bellator lightweight champion Usman Nurmagomedov on the horizon, Hughes remains focused. His ambitions extend beyond the title — he dreams of headlining an event in his native Belfast, a career-defining moment he aims to achieve.
