Rematch Clause Adds Drama to Alvarez vs. Munguia Super Middleweight Showdown

Alvarez vs. Munguia: As the highly anticipated showdown between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Jaime Munguia approaches on May 4, talks of a potential rematch are already circulating within the boxing world. According to Zanfer Promotions head and Munguia's co-promoter Fernando Beltran, if Munguia manages to pull off an upset victory over Alvarez, an immediate rematch is likely to follow in September, around Mexican Independence Day weekend.

Alvarez's manager, trainer, and lifelong confidant Eddy Reynoso revealed that Alvarez has previously only had rematch clauses in contracts for fights against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013 and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in 2017.

Despite Alvarez being the undisputed super middleweight champion and the betting favorite at -600, with Munguia as the underdog at +425 according to DraftKings, the Alvarez vs. Munguia is expected to be a major draw. The bout will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and will be presented on Prime Video, DAZN.

The Alvarez vs. Munguia matchup came to fruition after Alvarez ended his three-fight deal with PBC, reuniting with the promotion for this bout. Interestingly, Munguia is promoted by Golden Boy, headed by Alvarez's former longtime promoter and current rival, Oscar De La Hoya.

Regarding negotiations, Beltran emphasized the mutual respect between the parties, stating,

"We gave each other our word, and here we are. Both Munguia and Golden Boy trusted me during negotiations."

While some believed super middleweight contender David Benavidez deserved a shot at Alvarez, Beltran hinted that negative comments from Benavidez's camp may have cost him the opportunity. Beltran praised Alvarez for his contributions to boxing and emphasized Munguia's respect for him, stating,

"To be the best, you need to beat the best, and that's why we wanted the fight."

Beltran predicted that the Alvarez-Munguia bout would be a massive success, surpassing 1.2 million pay-per-view buys. He added,

"It's going to be a sensational fight, and they are going to bring out the best in each other."
