Tragic Loss in Boxing: Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju Dies After Collapsing Mid-Fight
The world of boxing was rocked by the tragic and unexpected death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju. The 40-year-old fighter collapsed during the third round of his light-heavyweight bout against Ghana’s Jon Mbanugu on March 29, 2025, at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra, Ghana. Despite initial dominance in the bout, Olanrewaju suddenly faltered, collapsing against the ropes with no apparent contact from his opponent.
Immediate medical attention was provided by ringside staff, and Olanrewaju was rushed to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead around 30 minutes after arriving at the hospital. The cause of his sudden collapse is still under investigation, with preliminary reports suggesting that a possible cardiac event could have been the cause.
Olanrewaju’s passing has left the boxing community in mourning, as he was well-respected both in Nigeria and internationally. With a professional record of 13 wins, eight losses, and two draws, Olanrewaju was a formidable light-heavyweight who had earned the Nigerian and West African titles during his career. Notably, he had secured 12 of his victories by knockout, demonstrating his power and skill inside the ring.
Prior to the fight, Olanrewaju was cleared by the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBC), which had certified him as medically fit to compete. This has led to further speculation about the possible causes of his collapse, with some pointing to the inherent risks of combat sports that have long been associated with tragic moments like these.
The Ghana Boxing Authority has opened an investigation into the incident, and the family of Olanrewaju is seeking answers to what caused his sudden death. While the boxing community grapples with this loss, many have paid tribute to Olanrewaju, remembering him not only for his achievements but also for his passion for the sport.
The Minister for Sports and Recreation in Ghana, Kofi Iddie Adams, expressed condolences, stating, “His passing reminds us of the unpredictable nature of the sport we passionately love. The risks of boxing are always present, and this tragic event serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers fighters face every time they step into the ring.”
As we mourn the loss of a talented athlete, Olanrewaju’s sudden death serves as a reminder of the risks that come with combat sports, and the boxing community is left grappling with the shock of this loss. Olanrewaju may be gone, but his memory and impact on the sport will not soon be forgotten.
