As the UFC begins to build a strong fight card for an exciting UFC 280 event on October 22nd. UFC chief business officer Hunter Campbell told broadcast partner ESPN that Diaz and Khamzat Chimaev have verbally agreed to fight in the welterweight main event at UFC 279, which takes place on September 10 in Las Vegas. Diaz and Chimaev could be a sensational showdown and that's what the UFC tried to book last year. Diaz then turned down the fight. As of last week, Diaz said the UFC had not officially offered another bout. Diaz, who is clear he wants out of the promotion, expressed his interest in exploring other avenues and said he felt the UFC was holding him "hostage." Diaz, one of the UFC's most popular fighters, was recently reported to not only have one fight left on his contract but is set to expire in October. This fight is the last on Diaz's contract Chimaev is the UFC's fastest-rising star. The 28-year-old Chimaev is undefeated at (11-0 MMA 5-0 UFC) with a first-round submission win over Li Jingliang in October 2021 after a long battle with COVID-19 and an April Returned in 2022 with a unanimous decision win over Gilbert Burns. Lucky seems Katlyn Chookagian, when you get pulled off of an event but then rebooked. That's what happened to Chookagian when the promotion pulled out @ UFC Paris and booked again a few weeks later. After being off the card (Chookagian (18-4 MMA, 11-4 UFC) Fiorot (9-1 MMA, 4-0 UFC) granted her wish and Chookagian was rebooked to fight @ UFC Paris. . Which was to be held on September 3 at Acor Arena. Later, however, Chookagian was forced to step down and was replaced by Jessica Andrade. But fate took a turn and after a few weeks Andrade had to withdraw from the event due to an injury. Subbing for Andrade is none other than one-time title challenger Katlyn Chookagian, who was Fiorot's original opponent before withdrawing for undisclosed reasons. News of Andrade's withdrawal and Chokagyan's return was first reported by Jon Anek during last Saturday's UFC Long Island broadcast. ESPN later reported that according to Chookagian 's manager, a contract had been signed. Chookagian (18-4) is the No. 1-ranked contender in the division and is currently riding a four-fight winning streak, including a Fight of the Night win over Amanda Ribas as well as decisions over Cynthia Calvillo, Jennifer Maia, and Vivian. Her last loss was to Jessica Andrade via first-round TKO in late 2020. Fiorot (9-1) called out Katlyn Chookagian after her last win over Jennifer Maia in March. Former UFC bantamweight champion Miesha Tate (19-9) makes her flyweight debut against Lauren Murphy (16-5) on the night's main card. Both fighters were trying to bounce back from their previous losses. Former bantamweight champion Miesha Tate and Lauren Murphy were featured in a thrilling women's flyweight bout. A highly-anticipated fight between top-ranked UFC featherweight Yair Rodriguez and Brian Ortega on ABC 3 headliner ended in a disappointing fashion due to an injury in the opening round. Rodriguez scored a technical knockout victory over Brian Ortega on Saturday after his opponent suffered a right shoulder injury in the first round of their featherweight clash at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York. The bout ended when Ortega appeared to dislocate his shoulder trying to dislodge himself from Rodriguez's armbar at the 4:11 mark of the first round. Unfortunately, the fight was taking a competitive shape before it ended. Rodriguez dominated the exchanges with straight punches and a variety of kicks, while Ortega looked to pressure his opponent and close the distance. "T-City" scored a takedown late in the period, and that's when Rodriguez attempted an armbar off his back. Soon after, Ortega freed herself from the difficulty but was unable to continue after a dislocated shoulder. The former title challenger was at a loss to explain what happened in the immediate aftermath. Rodriguez (14-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) was hoping to earn a shot at UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski with a win, but with the unexpected result, it's unclear if that will come to pass. In the co-main event of UFC Long Island, the promotion's #11-ranked strawweight, Amanda Lemos, returned to her career-winning streak with a second-round guillotine victory over #10-ranked Michelle Waterson-Gomez. Interestingly enough, the Brazilian used his slick grappling to catch "The Karate Hottie" in a guillotine choke and force the tap at the 1:48 mark of round 2. But the referee missed the tap, Lemos released the hold without getting in the middle of the referee, and Waterson-Gomez respectfully conceded the match. After losing her last match via standing arm triangle, Lemos gained some redemption by getting a sub of her own. A lot of feel and range with kicks and jabs opened up the action at UBS Arena on Saturday. As the round progressed, Waterson-Gomez circled the outside of the big, long lemos. Lemos timed her first takedown well, switching levels and moving forward with about a minute left in the round, putting Waterson-Gomez on his back. Round two started with Watterson throwing more kicks and working to stay out of Lemos' range. When they came together afterwards, Lemous caught Waterson-Gomez in a guillotine, threatened to roll her into the mount - and forced a tap! Lemouse drops the choke, but the ref doesn't see the tap, and initially makes no move to end the fight. However, Watterson-Gomez conceded the tap, signaling the end of the fight.
