Kamaru Usman, famously known as the “Nigerian Nightmare,” remains determined to reclaim his place at the top of the UFC despite recent setbacks. Known for his dominance in the welterweight division, Usman successfully defended his title five times before his reign was halted by Leon Edwards at UFC 278.
Edwards, nicknamed "Rocky," has proven to be a formidable opponent for Usman. Their trilogy culminated in Edwards retaining his title via majority decision. Usman then moved up to middleweight on short notice to face Khamzat Chimaev last October, only to experience another majority decision loss. This rare back-to-back defeat sequence has been a significant bump in Usman's otherwise stellar career.
Despite the three-fight losing streak, the 37-year-old Usman remains undeterred. He has his sights set on the winner of the upcoming UFC 304 main event, where Leon Edwards will defend his title against Belal Muhammad.
“I’m gonna do what it takes to earn that fight then that fight’s gonna happen,”
Usman declared on Pound 4 Pound.
“The boogeyman is on sabbatical, that’s all it is. I still got tread left in these tires, and I’m still gonna show that I am one of the best if not the best in the world.”
Usman, who holds a previous victory over Edwards, is unfazed by the prospect of facing him again.
“I don’t care if it’s with Leon, I’ve already beat Leon. Been there, done that, I bought the T-shirt and I’ve obviously shown I can beat Leon. There are many guys in that division right now that are exciting.”
A potential fourth bout with Edwards would make history as only the second tetralogy in UFC history, following the epic rivalry between Deiveson Figueiredo and Brandon Moreno. However, Usman might find a faster path back to the title if Belal Muhammad wins. Usman and Muhammad have expressed mutual interest in facing each other, with Usman appreciating Muhammad’s understated yet effective fighting style.
As Usman continues to train and prepare, he’s watching the UFC 304 main event closely. His resolve and drive to prove he's still among the best fighters in the world remain as strong as ever. With his career far from over, the Nigerian Nightmare is ready to rise again and reclaim his place at the pinnacle of the sport.
