- 21 yrs since Forrest v.s Mosely 2
Shane Mosley narrowed the gap on his bogey man Vernon Forrest, but that was all and still came up short on july 20th in 2002 at the Conseco Fieldhouse, Indianapolis, Indiana. Its been 21 yrs since that amazing display of boxing talent. Both were the best in that division at that time. After 12 disappointing rounds Forrest beat the Californian again by unanimous decision to retain the WBC welterweight title he won from Mosley six months earlier. "There was a lot of clinching," admitted Mosley. "Thatâs part of the game. I was being cautious when he darted in.â -Mosely Forrest had proved again he was the best welterweight in the world, yet he remained relatively unknown outside of boxing. Forrest, then 31 years old, wasnât one to seek the limelight: "I donât have an entourage". "When you see Vernon Forrest all you see is me.â Aside from boxing, Forrestâs other passion was helping mentally disabled and homeless children with his charity Destinyâs Child. âEverybody needs love,â he said. Forrest was so passionate about the cause he used much of his own money to fund the project. He even came under investigation when large sums were moved from his account and lenders began to suspect he was involved in money laundering. "It was truly his calling," Forrest's publicist, Kelly Swanson, said of his work with children. "When he wasn't boxing, this was his full-time job." To me thats what made him great, the person he was as much as the amazing fighter. Forrest was tragically shot and killed during an attempted robbery on July 25, 2009 in his hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. He was just 38 years old. He is truly missed.

- Some advice from Marciano.
I saw this great piece of advice for all you young fighters starting out from Rocky Marciano himself. The only heavyweight champ to retire undefeated. "All the time you're getting ready for a fight, working hard, but relaxed, always surrounded by people, never alone. And then suddenly it's time and you go out there, you and the other guy, and you're all alone out there in front of all those people and you have to take what you've learned and use it without making any bad mistakes, because one slip and it might be all over and there might not be another chance. You don't think of the money, although that's what you're in there for. You don't think of the crowd, although you sometimes hear them. You're trying to concentrate. You have your pride. All you want to do is win. And it's just you and him and only one of you can win". - Rocky Marciano
- Khabib Nurmagomedov Unlikely to Grapple Georges St-Pierre, Prioritizing Family Time
Despite fans' excitement over the prospect of a grappling showdown between UFC legends Khabib Nurmagomedov and Georges St-Pierre, Khabib's coach, Javier Mendez, believes it's unlikely to happen. The possibility arose when St-Pierre announced his participation in a UFC Fight Pass Invitational no-gi jiu-jitsu match on December 14, but as of now, an opponent has not been confirmed. Mendez revealed that Khabib Nurmagomedov is prioritizing his family and has vowed to spend more time with them. While the grappling match would not be a full-fledged fight, Mendez knows Khabib takes every challenge seriously, and participating in such an event would demand significant time and focus. "I don't know if Khabib would do the competition because he stated that his family is what it's all about," Mendez shared in an interview with MMA Junkie. "More devoted time for the family, and knowing him, any challenge is a work. So he's going to have to stay focused on one particular thing. He's not going to take it lightly if he does. So, I don't see that happening, but I could be wrong." Although Khabib has retired from professional MMA, he remains active on the mats and continuously trains in grappling. Mendez attested to Khabib's dedication, mentioning that he frequently grapples with up-and-coming fighters to help elevate their skills. "Khabib is always training," Mendez emphasized. "It's not like he doesn't grapple. He grapples all the time. So, he hasn't stopped training, he just doesn't train to fight. But he still does his cardio, he still grapples with the guys because he always tells me, 'How are the guys going to get ready for my level if they never know my level?'" While the dream matchup between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Georges St-Pierre remains uncertain, Mendez acknowledged that it could pique Khabib's interest. His commitment to honing his grappling skills has benefited his teammates tremendously, as Khabib continues to share his expertise with fellow fighters at Team Khabib.
- Patricky Freire Eyes Shot at Redemption and Retirement in Bellator Grand Prix Final
Bellator lightweight contender Patricky Freire is on a mission to reclaim his lost title and create a historic ending to his career as he eyes a potential rematch with Usman Nurmagomedov in the grand prix final. Last November, Freire suffered a tough defeat, surrendering his lightweight championship to the undefeated Nurmagomedov at Bellator 288. Now, to reclaim his throne, the Brazilian fighter must navigate through the grand prix tournament. Nurmagomedov, coming off a victory over Benson Henderson in the opening round, is set to face Brent Primus in the semifinals. Should both fighters advance to the final, the 37-year-old Freire sees the opportunity to make history and possibly cap off his career. âItâs a good fight to make history," Freire expressed to MMA Junkie Radio regarding a potential rematch with Nurmagomedov. "Take my belt again, take $1 million, maybe finish my career, I donât know. Letâs see.â But before reaching the final, Freire must focus on his opening-round battle against A.J. McKee at Bellator X Rizin 2 on July 30, near Tokyo. The winner of this clash will face Alexandr Shabliy, who secured a TKO victory against Tofiq Musayev to secure his spot in the semifinals. Keeping a keen eye on his brother Patricio's bouts with McKee, Freire is confident that he knows what to expect from the skilled lightweight. While McKee has moved up from featherweight, Freire doesn't anticipate any major changes in his approach. âHe donât change nothing," Freire stated. "He fights the same style. Maybe he tried to change something, but I donât believe too much.â With the potential of facing his conqueror Nurmagomedov in the grand prix final, Freire has a chance for redemption, to reclaim his title, and possibly bid farewell to his illustrious career on a triumphant note.
- Former UFC Champion Julianna Peña Hits Back at Maycee Barber's Criticism
Former UFC womenâs bantamweight champion, Julianna Peña, has fired back at Maycee Barber following the latter's recent criticisms. Peña, also known as 'The Venezuelan Vixen,' expressed her frustration with Barber's comments and questioned her credibility as a contender. In the aftermath of UFC 289, Julianna Peña was forced to withdraw from her highly anticipated trilogy bout with Amanda Nunes due to injury. Instead, Irene Aldana stepped in on short notice but suffered a defeat against 'The Lioness,' who subsequently announced her retirement, leaving Peña disappointed. During Nunes' retirement speech, Peña was caught shouting in the background and later revealed that she was tempted to storm the cage. Although Peña and Barber do not compete in the same weight class, the young prospect seized the opportunity to criticize the former champion ahead of her return at UFC Jacksonville. Responding to Maycee Barber's remarks on The MMA Hour, Peña's message was straightforward: "Listen, Maycee, you got a problem with me running my mouth? Drink a protein shake. Come up to 135, and you can come get some smoke too." Peña dismissed Barber's credibility by pointing out that the young fighter has never fought for a world title. She also referred to Barber's aspirations of becoming the youngest champion ever, which did not pan out as expected. Highlighting Barber's loss to Roxanne Modafferi, Peña questioned the basis for her trash talk, as she hasn't achieved the same level of success as herself. The former champion's message to Maycee Barber was clear: prove yourself in the octagon and achieve similar accomplishments before engaging in verbal sparring. Peña's impressive career in the UFC and her hard-earned championship title gives her the right to speak her mind. As the rivalry between the two fighters continues to simmer, fans eagerly await the possibility of a future showdown between Julianna Peña and Maycee Barber. Until then, it remains to be seen whether Barber will accept Peña's challenge to move up to the 135-pound division or if she will focus on proving herself in her current weight class.
- The Science of Cutting Weight in Combat Sports: Strategies and Safety Measures
Cutting weight is a widely practiced technique in combat sports such as MMA, wrestling, boxing, and judo. Anywhere athletes aim to compete in lower weight classes to gain a potential advantage over their opponents. While effective weight cutting can enhance performance, it is essential to understand the science behind it and the potential risks associated with improper practices. Understanding the Physiology of Weight Cutting Before discussing the methods, it's crucial to grasp the physiology of weight cutting. The human body is primarily composed of water and a significant portion of body weight is related to water retention. This forms the basis of many weight-cutting techniques. Water Weight Manipulation One of the most common weight-cutting methods involves manipulating water weight through dehydration. Athletes often reduce their water intake and use diuretics to increase fluid loss. This approach can lead to rapid weight loss. It's important to note that it is primarily a temporary reduction and not actual fat loss. Glycogen Depletion Glycogen, the stored form of carbohydrates, binds with water in the muscles and liver. When athletes engage in intense training or deplete their carbohydrate intake - the body uses up glycogen stores, resulting in additional water loss. This technique contributes to temporary weight reduction. You have to burn all available fuel for your body to deplete this. Popular Weight-Cutting Methods Sauna Sessions: Athletes spend time in saunas or hot baths to promote sweating and water loss. This practice can be dangerous, as excessive heat can lead to heatstroke and dehydration. Diuretics: These substances increase urine output and water loss. However, diuretics should be used with extreme caution and only under medical supervision, as they can lead to severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. Caloric Restriction: Severely restricting calorie intake can lead to quick weight loss, but it may also reduce energy levels and impair performance. Sweat Suits: Wearing sweat suits during training or exercise promotes sweating and water loss. This method should be used judiciously as it can lead to dehydration and overheating. Safety Measures and Responsible Weight Cutting Work with Professionals: It's crucial for athletes to work with experienced coaches, nutritionists, and healthcare professionals who can guide them through the weight-cutting process safely and effectively. Gradual Weight Loss: Instead of attempting to lose a large amount of weight just before the weigh-in, a more sustainable approach involves gradual weight loss over time through proper diet and training. Monitor Hydration: Athletes should stay well-hydrated during training and monitor their hydration levels regularly. Optimized Nutrition: A well-balanced diet with the right mix of macronutrients and micronutrients is essential for optimal performance and recovery. Rehydration After Weigh-In: After the weigh-in, athletes should focus on rehydrating and replenishing lost nutrients to prepare for their competition. Weight cutting in combat sports can provide a competitive advantage, but it must be approached with caution and knowledge of its potential risks. Understanding the science behind weight cutting allows athletes to make informed decisions about the methods they employ and prioritize their health and safety. By working with professionals, adopting responsible weight-cutting practices, and maintaining proper nutrition - combat athletes can optimize their performance while protecting their well-being. - How âBuchechaâ went from BJJ legend to MMA rising star
Marcus Almeida, better known as âBuchechaâ, is one of the most accomplished Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) practitioners of all time. He has won 17 world titles in the sport, dominating his opponents with his superior grappling skills and technique. But after reaching the pinnacle of BJJ, âBuchechaâ decided to challenge himself in a new arena: mixed martial arts (MMA). He signed with ONE Championship, the largest global sports media property in Asian history, and joined the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA), one of the best MMA gyms in the world. However, âBuchechaâ soon realized that MMA was a whole different ball game than BJJ. He had to learn how to strike, defend takedowns, and deal with punches and kicks while trying to submit his foes. He had to start from scratch, like a white belt all over again. âItâs different. A lot of people think that when they go in MMA, they can go in there, double leg and submit their opponent,â âBuchechaâ said in a recent interview with fellow Brazilian and UFC fighter Renato Moicano on the Money Moicano Podcast. âThatâs the goal, of course, for every jiu-jitsu fighter but to go there and get or execute what youâre planning to, itâs a different world.â But âBuchechaâ was not deterred by the steep learning curve. He embraced the challenge and worked hard to improve his skills and adapt to the new rules. He also had the benefit of training with some of the best MMA fighters in the world at AKA, such as Khabib Nurmagomedov, Daniel Cormier, and Luke Rockhold. The results speak for themselves. In his first four MMA fights under the ONE banner, âBuchechaâ has been unstoppable. He has finished all of his opponents in the first round, showcasing his improved striking and his lethal jiu-jitsu. He has also shown his durability and heart, overcoming adversity and surviving tough moments. âBuchechaâ is now one of the rising stars in ONEâs heavyweight division, which features some of the most dangerous fighters on the planet. He is set to face his toughest test yet on August 4, when he takes on Oumar âReug Reugâ Kane at ONE Fight Night 13: Allazov vs Grigorian. Kane is a Senegalese wrestling sensation who has also made a splash in MMA. He has won all four of his fights by knockout or submission, using his immense strength and power to overwhelm his foes. He is also undefeated in his professional wrestling career, where he is known as âThe Lion of Africaâ. The clash between âBuchechaâ and Kane promises to be an explosive affair, as both men are hungry for glory and eager to prove themselves as the best heavyweights in ONE. The winner will move one step closer to a title shot against reigning champion Arjan Bhullar. The fight will take place at the historic Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, as part of a stacked card featuring some of the best kickboxers and Muay Thai fighters in the world. The event will be streamed live on Prime Video for free for subscribers in North America. If you are a fan of MMA or BJJ, you donât want to miss this fight. It will be a showcase of skill, power, and heart between two warriors who have made remarkable transitions from one sport to another. Who do you think will win between âBuchechaâ and Kane? Do you think âBuchechaâ can become a world champion in MMA like he did in BJJ? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
- Dricus Du Plessis out ; Adesanya to fight Sean Strickland at UFC 293 in Sydney
Because No. 1 contender Dricus Du Plessis won't be prepared for the UFC 293 pay-per-view main event in Sydney, UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya has offered Sean Strickland a shot at the championship. The following 185-pound title bout was all but decided after Du Plessis stunned the mixed martial arts world by defeating former champion Robert Whittaker at UFC 290 earlier this month. Later, while Du Plessis and Adesanya were duelling in the Octagon, Adesanya offered a random promo laced with N-words. However, the schedule appears to have changed on Wednesday (July 19), following Adesanya's social media criticism of "Stillknocks." âI donât even know how to start this, but Dricus DuPâssy, you fâking bâtch,â Adesanya said. ââOh, all he had to do was put on some glove; I was ready to go again.â No, you werenât. Youâre a bâtch. Thatâs why youâre not taking this fight. Your foot is sore. My knee was jacked for my last fight. Guess what I did? I showed up because thatâs what a fâking champion does. Championship caliber, built different. âA lot of you fighters talk about, âIâll fight anyone, anywhere, anytime,ââ Adesanya continued. âNo, you wonât. I do. Alex Volkanovski does. Weâre built different. Iâm at the gym right now about to get some work.â âSo, Iâm fighting in Sydney. I donât give a fâck who. Dâckless DuPâssy, fâck off. Youâre out. [Sean] Strickland, youâre in. Letâs do the man dance. Show you how to really dance. Yeah, Iâm tired of all you guys talking shât about, âI can fight, I can fight.â No, you canât, DuPâssy. Bâtch.â Adesanya vs. Strickland is planned for UFC 293 on Sept. 10, according to people close to the issue, although nothing has been decided yet. Strickland is on a two-fight winning streak after finishing Abus Magomedov in the second round on July 1. He demanded a title shot following his victory and declared he "has paid his fâcking dues."

It is official that on October 21 at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi, Islam Makhachev will defend his lightweight title in a rematch against No. 1 ranked Charles Oliveira. The fight will take place inside the Etihad Arena, and American spectators should expect an early start. In their previous encounter at UFC 280, which took place in Abu Dhabi, Makhachev outclassed Oliveira to win via arm triangle in round two. Since then, Alexander Volkanovski, who was moving up from featherweight, has challenged Makhachev for the right to defend his championship against him for the chance to become a double champion. The fight was very debated, and many spectators gave the Australian the victory. Oliveira, on the other hand, knocked out Beneil Dariush in the first round of UFC 289 to defeat the No. 4 contender. Makhachev was thought to be most vulnerable to Dariush of the top five lightweights. With the win, Oliveira has now defeated all five of the top lightweights, and it was clear that he was entitled to a rematch.
