  • Mentor Of The Week - Genghis Khan

If you didn't know how badass the Mongolians were, well you're about to. These dudes had pet eagles they would hunt with and the country still practices eagle hunting as a cultural tradition today. They rode horses without saddles, and even shot archery from horseback. The Mongol empire had become the largest of it's time in the Asian continent. Genghis Khan's name may be synonymous with tyrants and warlords but few people actually know his true history. He came to power by uniting various nomadic tribes and eventually conquered most of Asia. Many accounts claim that Khan was a ruthless warlord responsible for the deaths of millions in his conquest. The Buddhist historical writings describe him as a liberator who brought together various groups. So the real man behind the name is contested but what can't be argued is the facts. Largest Asian empire of it's time. Creator of the Mongol Empire, which lead to China needing to build the Great Wall just to keep them out. Genghis Khan may have conquered through total war and he may have conquered through diplomacy. Chances are with a empire that big, he did both from time to time. One thing that is fact that's survived through the years about Khan. He was religiously tolerant, allowed his kingdom to worship whatever gods they wanted, and himself liked to learn other religions ? cultures life philosophies. He was a student and curator of life, more than just a bloodthirsty warlord with countless wives. Genghis Khan was likely somewhat of a renaissance man to achieve what he did. Facts and fiction aside, you can find a mentor in him as you're trying to conquest anything. Handle it appropriately, be civil and grow your life but also get down right savage when you have to.

  • Big John McCarthy Tackles Dana White

Big John McCarthy is one of MMA's most loved referees and iconic within the sport itself. An all around good dude he travels around the country speaking at schools about anti-bullying campaigns and encourages kids to find positive outlets in life like sports or hobbies. A BJJ blackbelt himself, the guy knows everything about combat sports and has a good sense of direction in life. Big John has been calling out how the industry treats fighters for some time now and especially critical of Dana White as recently stating on the Weighing In podcast - "Dana needs to bow down to Vince because he stole everything from Vince. He stole his persona, he stole exactly how he runs his company, all of that." In the context of Dana saying he couldn't have scripted a better UFC fight than McMahan's WWE for an upcoming bout. I think this is where all of Johns concern boils down. The treatment of fighters and where Dana stands as the face of the worlds largest MMA promotion. If the UFC fighters were treated better in terms of compensation, insurance, etc. I don't think McCarthy would be as critical as he is of Dana White. McCarthy Recently retweeted some stats on fighter pay and it's not so good compared to other sports. UFC fighters make about 16% of revenue from their promotion where as MLB Baseball players make 54%, NBA basketball players make 50%, NFL players make 46%, Bellator fighters make 44%. Why does the largest human gladiator proportion of sports promoter, pay their fighters the least % of revenue? I agree with John McCarthy's criticism on Dana White. Hell, I even agree with Jake Paul on something. Dana White may not own the UFC anymore and have the hand to change the company he founded. If he doesn't do something soon though, I think the rest of the world may soon realize we can stream better fights with company's Like Bellator or Fight.TV!

  • Ancient History Of Boxing

Boxing is a sport that today exists in all cultures and corners of the world. You might be surprised to know that's not just today but boxing has been recorded in many cultures even before the age of information and traveling / trade routes. Boxing has been documented in the ancient Greeks, Egyptians, Sumerian, Chines, and so on. It turns out that punching each other in the face is pretty universal. Humans have been doing it since before civilization so. One can assume boxing might even pre date humanity. A sport with rules and such is likely still unique to us though. It's interesting the little niche differences between various cultures ancient boxing. The ancient Greeks boxed in sandy pits with hide gloves to cover their hands but no padding and also fought naked. The Romans inserted metal into their boxing gloves, to maximize devastation from heavy blows. Roman Boxing often ended with the loser dying and was much more brutal than the sport we know today. Ancient Egyptians would box for the Pharaohs entertainment. They wore no gloves and would fight until the other boxer got knocked out. The ancient Minoans would fight with helmets and gloves, their boxing more of a point system. So fight fans, which style of boxing would you like to have competed in the most?

  • Paige VanZant Opens Up On Mental Health

Paige VanZant has recently come out on her and her husbands blog - A Kickass Love Story about mental health and how she's dealing with her current loss streak. She signed with Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship back in 2020 and since is riding a 0-2 fight record wit her last loss July 23rd. Fight fans saw her abruptly leave the arena, which isn't uncommon for a fighter after a big upset loss. Mike Tyson was just quoted as saying a career in fighting can have you wanting to kill yourself. In the context of him pleading his son to try a different career path. Humans in general all struggle with mental health from time to time. Fighters are especially of no exception. Imagine a career built around either beating people up or getting beaten up. Where your reward depends on how well you can fight. A loss is more than just a bad day at work. It's a permanent mark on your record and all over the internet in seconds for billions of people top see and gossip on. Paige had some words regarding this on her video blog - “People like me struggle a lot, everybody does. Mental health is no joke and I need to start taking my mental health more seriously. Losses suck and going through hard times it’s not fun but it does get better and you can get through it and life goes on.” “When I walked out of the ring, I didn’t just walk to my locker room, I literally walked all the way outside and I just went and cried in the parking lot by myself. I said some things to my husband that are pretty terrible about like my mental state. I told him I didn’t want to live anymore, that this wasn’t for me anymore. Like life wasn’t for me anymore so I was disappointed, It was hard." “Everyone expects me to lose and everyone expects me to fail. I don’t know, I just feel like people have this specific perception of who I am and especially online. It’s crazy how much people can hate on a single person. I just don’t get it. I pride myself of being a good person. I think that’s the most important thing for me. I never talk bad about my opponents. I never say a single negative thing about their character. You never know what somebody’s going through. You never know what someone’s on the verge of.” We agree with you Paige. You truly never know what someone is going through. People are going to talk crap about you. The more you're known in this world, the more it will happen. We just gotta remember to focus on the fight outside of the ring just as much as the ones inside.

  • The Longest Boxing Match In History

The average boxing match lasts about 17 minutes of total fight time. Some go for much longer and some are way quicker but 17 minutes of fighting is enough to gas out the best athletes. It's enough to run right into the dirt for any cardio finessed fighter. There is one boxing match from history that puts 17 minutes to shame. Try over 7 hours. Andy Bowen and Jack Burke fought the longest recorded gloved boxing match in history. April 6th, 1893 at Olympic Club in New Orleans Louisiana is where this went down. The fight lasted 110 rounds, it went from 9pm until 7 hour later the next day early in the morning. Burke won the first 25 rounds but Bowen refused to go down. By midnight most of the fight fans had left the building, the ones who stayed were falling asleep. By the 110th round, they weren't even swinging at each other anymore and the ref called the fight a split contest. Both fighters got to split the purse and looked like a bloody mess afterwards. These two will forever go down as some of the biggest baddest dudes in history. Do you think they would have kept that same energy against todays most elite fighters? We can wonder what would happen if there were no limits on fight times today. How long might Pacquiao and Mayweather have gone at it?
